We just received the schedule for the 2013 Canadian Ultimate Championships. Refinery is seeded 11th, starting in Pool C against General Strike (2nd place finish in 2012), Grand Trunk (a strong team out of Toronto), and Quake (the 3rd seed out of Quebec, 14th overall).
First though, an overdue recap.
Refinery has grown up this year. We were a little overwhelmed with the interest at tryouts, having to select a team of 26 from a group of 62. Selection is always difficult, and while we can’t say we chose the best 26, we chose a dedicated 26, and that’s helped us through the growing pains.
The first of those pains was taking a stab at Flowerbowl’s Elite Open division. We were trying out a new offence against the region’s top teams. We went 0-6, but got a good feel of what we’d need to work on these past few months.
Next, a mid-season shake-up saw several of our top players recruited by Blackfish. Losing top talent is a challenge, but it’s always good to see good players advance.
It wasn’t long before we got to face them on the field at Kelowna KAOS. The pool was a better match for us than at Flowerbowl and we managed to get our offence working against every team out there.
We went 3-3, placing third out of seven, finally securing a victory against our provincial rival, Sofa Kings.
Regionals went much the same way the following week, with tough games against Furious George, Richie and Friends, Sofa Kings, and Blackfish. Refinery came out 1-3, good enough to secure the 4th seed out of our region.
In 6 days, we get to test ourselves again!

Refinery is hosting two open scrimmages this week:
If you’re interested in playing with Refinery this summer, you need to come to these. It’ll give you a chance to show off your strengths and get a feel for how you’ll fit in with the team. These are part of the tryout process.
If necessary, a more formal tryout will follow to make some initial cuts, and we’ll finalize the team following Flowerbowl (our first tournament).
Head’s up: tryouts are coming!
Vancouver ultimate players!
Refinery will be starting our season in early May. We intend to hold our first open tryouts the week of May 6-10, or May 13-17. Dates, times, locations TBA.
Refinery aims to be Vancouver’s stepping stone into open-level competitive ultimate. We compete to win, but understand that the benefit to our players is more in the skill development at twice-a-week practices, play-time against high level teams, and experience in the Canadian Ultimate Championships series.
Thanks for all the support Refinery got from Vancouver’s awesome ultimate community. Specifically, thanks to Blackfish (for helping to get us started), VUL (for providing fields), Jordan Bower (for taking on a player-coach role early in our season), BE Ultimate for making our jerseys, and Patrick Gatien (for coaching us in the lead up to regionals and nationals).
We’re taking a break until tryouts next spring, but for those interested in trying out, there are lot of opportunities to improve your skills starting now:
- VUL fall and winter leagues
- UBC Rec’s ultimate league
- UBC Men’s ultimate team has open practices in the fall. Email email@example.com for info
